This is where I write about my exotic, stress-free lifestyle, my perfectly behaved children, and my no-fail mothering techniques. Yeah, I like to write fiction.

On Preschool

In one week I have gone from saying “I didn’t go to preschool and I turned out just fine” to saying, “How was your second day at preschool, honey?”  My older son is a little resentful that he didn’t get to go to the fancy-schmancy preschool that the younger one is attending, but honestly?  When he was four we didn’t have the money and the waiting list was a mile long.  Suddenly my youngest benefits from a little time (we now have more money) and the fact that they had four openings (which shrunk to two in only one day).

Yesterday was our “first day” and already strange women were swarming around and shaking my hand, introducing themselves (which I only find irritating because I know I’ll never remember their names) and leaving me feeling a little like I just got fooled into joining some kind of cult.  One lady today kindly introduced herself to me and said, “I know you’re new…”  as if I had just moved into an Amish community or something.  She did invite the entire preschool class to come to her home (for her daughter’s birthday this weekend) to watch Toy Story 2 on a projector screen which I thought was very sweet and slightly insane.

To be fair, my oldest DID go to a co-op preschool (that means it was free) but it was only a negative experience for him (that means he was the only boy and he hated it) and I hated taking my turn once a month to be the “teacher”.

What are your thoughts on preshool, internets?  Not worth the money?  Totally worth it?  Some children benefit from it while others don’t really need it?  Discuss.

  1. I love preschool and think it can benefit any child! It gives them a leg up before starting kindergarten. I used headstart for Madelynn(we were poor than) and now I pay for Sadie to go and I have seen her grow so much. I am very confident with her going to kindergarten next year.

  2. Megan’s deep thoughts on Preschool:
    1. I think that sometimes preschool is really just daycare and that is dumb.
    2. Some of my kids went and some didn’t and they are all turning out fine.
    3. There are lots of reasons to enroll in preschool and the only one that I think is a bad reason is when kids get put in preschool because their parents don’t want them home. This to me is a red flag that if the parents aren’t enjoying their child they should maybe re-examine their parenting plan.

  3. I always felt preschool was mostly to teach kids how to interact with each other and how to act in a school setting. Some kids need a little more of a push in a socially independent direction than others. I feel like I have to reevaluate preschool with each child.
